The E.C.H.S. Spirit I believe we all Share....!.
To my fellow ECHS Classmates………..I hope with all of my heart to be able to attend our October 2003 Reunion………..of this I am not assured…….however, with that being said, I wish to reflect on many of my thoughts, while constructing this web site…….
Thomas Wolfe once said,
"You can't go home again". And a reunion is a sort of going home. Back to what we once were.
Laying out and developing the ECHS web site…..has been a journey back in time, for me personally. And my journey took many turns……some were detours of tears…..others were shortcuts to laughter. The journey thus far, has been a 'true labor of love'.
For some of us, October 4th, will be as if yesterday has returned, like no time has passed! For others, it will seem like going back through an eternity. Some of us turned out (at this stage: ended up) quite like we thought or planned, and as had been predicted.
For others.....it was not quite..... for some, even the opposite! Many of us have come oh so far! There are some of us that just can't be here in October, and some are not even with us any more! For those classmates, I tried to create a small Special 'corner' within our web site.
A reunion is a milestone-in itself……a mark of success and achievement. Just living 45 years past high school is the most important achievement, in our finite existence… It seems an appropriate juncture to pause: to measure and reflect……on where we have been, where we should have been............what we've done.........and the should'ves that we all carry. (Yes, I said all of us!)
Many of us will not be recognized, although we were well known, are still known, and most still remembered. Of course, none of us are the people or the kids, we once were. Mostly we are better now.....
Yet there is a sameness....and a unity of notion: We would like to do it all over again! Maybe somewhat different.......and in some instances maybe not! However, doing it again.........that's the point, the theme of it all. Oh yes, we'd like to do that! Maybe.........just maybe, Mr. Eason or Mr. Calloway were just a little bit wrong.
And……..You really know you are getting old when………
You realize that in 1958: There were not 50 states! A computer took up a whole building, and no one you knew had a clue how to work one! Most Cars were made by The Big 3 and only the really 'rich' people had a foreign car! (But not Uncle Miles!) No one would be caught dead owning Japanese made stuff, which was "junk". "Drugs" meant something a doctor prescribed! The phone company meant Carolina Telephone & Telegraph.....Norfolk Telephone & Telegraph and AT & T-for long distance, period! Cars were supposed to be two-tone, (maybe even three-tone) with lots of chrome. A 50+ yr. old gal or guy was an old-something we never intended to be! There was crazy talk of someday sending a man to the moon! The biggest problem on a TV sitcom was Ricky Nelson trying not to hurt the feelings of the girl he would rather not take to the prom.
And finally, you know you are getting old when you realize this could be your last reunion… So, maybe, just maybe........ you should give it some more thought.........you better be there!
With wonderful memories and warm thoughts to all....I hope you enjoy!
